National Youth HIV Awareness Day

San Juan, Puerto Rico | April 10, 2026 | By the Project TIES Team

Today marks National HIV Awareness Day for Young People, a key date to highlight the impact of HIV on new generations and promote education, prevention, and access to treatment.

This initiative, created in 2013, aims to empower young people with reliable information and tools that enable them to make informed decisions about their health and sexual practices. In San Juan, Puerto Rico, 9% of new HIV diagnoses projected for 2025 were among young people, according to data from the Puerto Rico Department of Health's HIV/AIDS Surveillance program.

Education, eliminating stigma, and access to testing and treatment remain fundamental pillars for healthy youth. Promoting open dialogue, encouraging the use of prevention methods, and ensuring accessible health services are essential actions to reduce new infections and improve the quality of life for people living with HIV.

This day not only invites reflection, but also collective action, recognizing that an informed and supported youth is key to building a healthier and stigma-free future.
