The Secretary of the Department of Health, Dr. Víctor M. Ramos Otero, reported that Puerto Rico surpassed national averages in retention in care and viral load suppression among people diagnosed with HIV, according to data from the implementation report of the 2022–2026 Integrated Plan for HIV Surveillance, Prevention, and Treatment.
A total of 12,448 people received services through the Ryan White Programs on the Island, according to the Secretary. Among individuals diagnosed with HIV, 92.4% were retained in care and 93.8% achieved viral load suppression—figures that exceed the averages reported by Ryan White programs in the United States and its territories.
The Secretary of Health indicated that these results are the outcome of a strategy focused on early diagnosis, timely access to treatment, and continuity of care. He also emphasized the importance of accountability to assess progress and strengthen evidence-based decision-making.
Regarding the 2022–2026 Integrated HIV Plan, Ramos Otero explained that it “serves as the roadmap for surveillance, prevention, and treatment efforts on the Island, aligned with the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and the federal Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, through a coordinated and person-centered approach.”
